It's sessions like these that make me realise that I'm not just taking a picture, but doing SO much more by freezing these precious moments in time. Dad came home from Afghanistan just in time to see the birth of his 4th child. He wasn't due back for a few weeks after their little bundle was expected, but by the grace of God, all the stars aligned and he was granted early leave and thanks to this lil' Angel, he waited for his Daddy to arrive safely before he made his big debut into the world :) Thank you to all the military personnel who sacrifice all that you do (SO much more than we could ever imagine) for our freedom and safety. God bless you all and welcome home Officer "K"!!

365 Days of Gratefulness (Day 8)

Today (and every single day), I'm SO grateful for our Police K9, Kopper. With a mouth full of teeth and a heart full of love, he would lay down his own life to protect my husband and any one of you. He's a loyal and a trusted companion like no other. An unfortunate event brought Kopper into our lives back in 2002. There was a group of upcoming Police K9's being shipped from Slovakia to the States in the cargo unit of an airplane. There was also a body that was packed in dry ice that was being shipped in the same compartment of the plane. Apparently, dry ice sucks the oxygen out of the air and when the airport personnel went to take the dogs off the plane, all the K9's were dead and they thought Kopper was as well. He was unconscious at the time, however, fortunately he survived that terrible tragedy (the SOLE K9 survivor) and a twist of fate brought him into our lives. The Department that initially had purchased him decided to back out because they didn't know if he'd have brain damage or if he'd now be *fit for duty*. He was then donated to a man in a wheelchair, however, he was "too much" dog with far too much energy for this man, so he brought him to the K9 training facility where my husband trains. I love it when you can see Divine intervention working right in front of your eyes............my hubby just so happened to be at K9 training with our 1st K9 when Kopper had been dropped off. After hearing the story, Rick said "this dog survived for a reason" and he then went to evaluate him. As it turns out, he was MORE than anything he could have ever dreamed to be partnered with and fortunately the man who brought him to K9 graciously donated him to Rick and the Trenton Police Department. Through the years that Rick and Kopper have worked together, he has proved time and time again, that he did indeed "survive for a reason". He was born to be a Police K9 and he has lived up to it's every name. He's turning 11 next month, yet every time my hubby starts to get dressed for work, you'd think he was a puppy as he eagerly awaits leaving for yet another shift :)

So, last night I *ATTEMPTED* to watch "I am Legend" (Will Smith) with my 15 year old son and OMGSH, NO wonder I have never watched it before. I lasted about 30 minutes before I was freaked out of my mind and had to shut it off. (And this was the Tv version, I can't imagine the other). So............Today I am more than Grateful for Disney and the wonderful movies they make to keep my little one happy and me grounded. LOL From now on, I think I'll stick to the old tapes and Dvd's in my entertainment center :)

Today I'm so Grateful for the 54 degree Sunny weather here in Michigan and the new found love I have for the City of Detroit. We spent the afternoon with great friends skating outside at CAMPUS MARTIUS in Detroit. I can't believe we've lived here all these years and I have never taken the kids there before. You'd never know we were in the heart of Detroit as we skated around next to a HUGE CHRISTmas tree and ate smores by a campfire on the street :) Being a Country Girl & having being raised up North, I've always had a distorted opinion of what Detroit is like, but after today, I have a new appreciation for this great City. Thanks for an awesome day Shannon & Lauren. We had SO much fun with you both!!

Today, I'm Grateful for my crazy 3 1/2 year old pup, Maverick, who no matter how COLD, no matter how EARLY, no matter how MANY times we've done this, he's always eager & excited to go for a run with me. With the exception of wiping me out one time while we were running, he's always a joy to have alongside. I sure wish I shared the same excitement he does when we venture out :)

Today (and every single day), I'm so incredibly GRATEFUL that God blessed ME with the most wonderful, loving, caring, amazing, incredible, patient, kind hearted/gentle Mother I could ever ask for!!!! Although our time here on Earth was cut FAR TOO short, I am forever grateful for the 36 years of love, compassion and guidance my Mother poured her heart and soul into sharing with my brother and I (as well as, everyone she met). She taught me so many valuable lessons about life, but most importantly, she taught me about LOVE.........the kind of love that is unconditional, forgiving and always, ALWAYS there (whether here on Earth or in Heaven above, nobody and nothing can take her love away from me and for that, I am forever grateful.). I cherish my Mother's love and HUGE heart and always say if I can be even just half the mother she was to me, I'd be one pretty amazing Mom :) Words cannot even begin to express how much I miss my Mom, but I thank God for His grace and mercy and for His promise of eternity. One glorious day, we'll all be together again. As for today, I'll cherish this photograph and the many wonderful memories of my Mother that I hold so very near and dear to my heart.

As I think of my loving Mother and look at this picture, I'm reminded of a poem I read @ her funeral and how very true it is:

The added twist (and challenge for me) will be to also take & post a picture of what I'm grateful for each day :) Does anyone want to join us in this year of gratefulness and being thankful for what we do have (despite any circumstances we're going through)? Although this is just a snapshot @ midnight when my eyes were barely being held open by toothpicks, the first thing I'm grateful for this year (and each & every day) is these BEAUTIFUL, HAPPY, HEALTHY, ENERGETIC, AMAZING and WONDERFUL blessings God has entrusted me to raise. Our son fractured his elbow yesterday while @ pitching practice (1st pitch, go figure) and we just found out that he'll be having surgery this week to repair it :( In light of such an unfortunate accident, this is the only quote that comes to mind today on Motivational Monday.

Looks like we're going to be doing a LOT of dancing in the weeks to come. And since I can't update a post without a picture, this is what my sweet *baby's* elbow looks like on the inside. This little Angel took a little while to settle in and close her eyes, but once she did, she was OUT and wasn't disturbed one bit by the many poses I put her in. Running for a Cure

This is more of a personal post, but it seems that my "Motivational Monday's" are meant to give you a bit more insight into my life, who I am as a person and to share with you the things that motivate and inspire me :) I've been a runner for 20+ years and my runs mainly have consisted of a few 5K's, 10K's, a Duathlon and just last year, I completed two very awesome 1/2 Marathons (which is by far my favorite race distance). I originally started running to lose weight while I was in college, but much to my surprise I found it to be a GREAT stress reliever, so it has forever stuck and is now something that's just become a part of who I am. When people ask me if I've run a lot of races, my typical response is "No, I just run because I don't know any better" :). I've also had several people ask if I've ever run a full Marathon and my response was always the same......."Absolutely NOT, NO WAY/NO HOW/NEVER EVER will I". Well, I guess I better bite my tongue the next time I say "Never"...........

As most of you know, I lost my beautiful Mother to Uterine Sarcoma 3 years ago and it has completely turned my life upside down and is by far the WORST thing that has ever happened to me. I spent an entire year and a half in a deep depression and honestly didn't know where to turn. Thank the Lord for His grace and mercy and for my amazing family and friends for lifting me up when I couldn't take another step.

After my Mother's passing, I had lost a ridiculous amount of weight and had completely stopped running for about 6 months. With the grief imposed weight loss I was afraid to run, but I really missed it and I knew it was something I needed in my life to help me move forward, to help me grieve and to help me heal. So, little by little I started running again, but it wasn't an easy task after a 6 month break (which was VERY frustrating). With each agonizing step, I just kept repeating "Every step I take is for YOU, Mom" and the next thing I knew we were holding our first annual 7 10K's for Sarcoma event and just yesterday I ran my very first FULL MARATHON in 4:22:22 in honor of my beautiful Mother. I am also thrilled to report that with the generous donations from family and friends who sponsored me, I was able to raise almost $1,800.00 toward Sarcoma research!! WOW, what a fantastic journey this has been, full of many highs and many lows, but what I've learned the most from this training adventure is that it has not only been very healing for me, but it's also helped teach me that only MY mind is what will hold me back from doing what I think is "impossible". It's what lies within myself and only inside of me that can determine what I'm really capable of.

Today's Motivational Monday is based on running a Marathon, but I believe that life is a Marathon and only YOU can draw deep down inside yourself to see what you're really capable of. Have a blessed day everyone :) I'm going to go ice my aching thighs. ha ha

Motivational Monday

OOPS, I just realized I was so busy last week that I completely forgot to post my motivational Monday quote, so I'm going to post two here to make up for it :)

In light of the many months of training I've been doing over the past several months to prepare for my upcoming Marathon in honor of my Mother (God rest her soul), I find this quote to be quite fitting!!! Since April, I have run over 756 miles & this coming Sunday, I will be putting all that hard word & training to use by running Detroit's Marathon (my 1st)

I'm starting something new & I hope you'll follow along. I LOVE LOVE LOVE inspiring, motivational, touching quotes and stories and will be sharing some of my favorites with you every Monday morning, so please be sure to check in often and follow along every Monday morning. Who said Monday's can't be fun?!?!?!!!

Right before my Mom passed away she told me about a book of inspiring quotes and poems she had been writing in since 1986. She went on to tell me that it was almost complete and she wanted me to have it once she had finished it. Unfortunately, she didn't have the chance to complete it, but thanks to my Dad, I have now completed it for her. The book I received (with her very own handwriting) is my MOST TREASURED gift of her (well, aside from her abounding LOVE and HUGE heart). It warms my heart and also brings me to tears when I read it, but it also helps me keep that close connection to her and know that her spirit shines within me. My Mom and I were SO close and it's amazing to me that I never knew she wrote in such a journal, nor shared the same passion for inspiring words and inspiring quotes. Thanks to my Mom, it's now something she's inspired me to physically write (you know pen & paper~*wink wink*) in daily for my own kids one day.

Anyway, that's the background behind my motivation for doing this every Monday. Without further ado, here's my 1st Motivational Monday quote:

The "please, thank you's & yes, SURE" just melt my heart & blow me away. From such young ages, they already know & follow the simple things in life. This young man was hilarious & I had the BEST time photographing him. I told his Mom that I seriously need to hire him as my assistant. He is PRICELESS!!! I got the biggest kick out of *attempting* to pose him a certain way & he'd say "how about this" & it was 100 times better than anything I could have come up with. He's a true natural & was an absolute JOY to photograph. I will definitely be borrowing him for some modeling down the road. This handsome kiddo will move mountains someday :)

A Teeny Tiny MIRACLE!!!

This sweet baby boy is an absolute miracle. He was born 2 months premature, weighing in @ 3lbs. 10oz & now (almost 3 months old), he's tipped the scales @ 8 lbs. 1 oz.!! (Praise the Lord!!!) While in the NICU, his parents nicknamed him "Hammer", so you can only imagine my delight when I was playing ball the other day with my lil' Angel & I noticed the bat she was swinging was named "Hammer" :) What a beautiful blessing this sweet Lil' Angel is!

It's really CRAZY how fast time flies & how tall our kids grow with each passing year. I can't believe our son now TOWERS over me & our middle daughter is already my height (which really isn't saying much for me :) The only hope I now have in not being the shortest of the family lies within our youngest daughter. Hmmmmm..................maybe I should increase the weight of the bricks I put on her head??? :) lol

I hear so many people always say that 6 week old babies are so difficult to photograph......However, that was definitely not the case with this little Angel. I had such a great time photographing this amazing family, who is not only BEAUTIFUL on the outside, but doubly as beautiful on the inside. This AWESOME husband & their precious little boys came for a portrait session back in November, so that they could surprise their Mama on Christmas morning with portraits of themselves, as well as, an upcoming family session (today). I was SO impressed that these little boys (ages 2 & 5) could keep such a big secret & pull off this wonderful surprise so beautifully. Fast forward to today are a few pictures of the MANY wonderful memories we captured today & the beautiful bond their family shares. The boys were SO cute & funny.....I'll give you two guesses what was so funny in a few of these pictures. "As I have never thought of myself as a writer or a photographer, I figured, what the heck?!?! Might as well give it a shot. What is the saying...you miss 100% of the shots you don't take....so here goes.

In my eyes, I have a house full of heroes. A big one and a few little ones. Let me explain. My husband, John, is a Sergeant for the Trenton Police Department. He has done this high stress job for 22 years. Most entirely on swing shift, which, as we all know, is a terrible shift to work. This job has aged him. He has given over 20 years of his life selflessly to strangers that he does not know. He was hired into this job with big ideals and dreams of what he (along with every other rookie officer) could do to help others and make this world a little bit safer. By God's grace he has been unharmed physically, but my heart aches for all the heroes out there, doing this job, and having to see what they see. I imagine that what they do see makes them awfully weary and jaded.

On this Halloween night, my son's father had to work yet again. But they weren't distressed because they knew that they could wave to their daddy as he drove by, knowing that he was making sure that all the adorable trick-or-treaters were safe. As he pulled up, you should have seen the absolute looks of adoration on their faces! They are so proud of their daddy and he is all the hero they need. If you could imagine their shrieks of joy as they yelled for their daddy! "That's my daddy...he's a police man!". This photo captures the moment he got out of his police cruiser and one son jumped in his arms and the other wrapped around his leg. They all looked at me just in time to smile for the camera.

I am explaining the scenario so you can imagine the looks of awe my boys give to their hero, their daddy. I don't know if John sees it as his boys look at him. I can tell you that the boys don't see it, when their daddy gets off work, sits on the couch, and stares at his boys with that same look of adoration...that awe and pride of his sons...his heroes.

As I am writing this, I am teary eyed, as I am the luckiest one of all. The one who gets to witness all this love shining from a single look. I hope they all get to see it from my face as I look at my house full of heroes...big and small."

We are so excited to announce a new non-profit program that will support individuals and their families who have been touched by ANY form of Cancer.

As many of you are aware, Cancer has devastated and invaded my life in the WORST possible way~~We lost my Mother to a rare form of cancer called "Sarcoma" in 2008 (at the age of 63); we lost two of my Mom's younger brothers to cancer; my Father-in-law lost his battle with cancer in 2009; and many close friends have faced this challenge as well. Needless to say, we've encountered several VERY heartbreaking years, but one thing I've learned from cancer is that no matter what happens, it cannot shatter our memories, our love, our hopes, our dreams and most importantly, our FAITH. Through our own devastating loss(es), I wanted to make a difference, so in July, 2009, my family and I joined forces with "The International Team Sarcoma Initiative" and founded our own Sarcoma Team, called "Heavenly Rainbow Cross-Roads". We are entering our 3rd year this coming July and we really hope you'll all be a part of our event.

This year, however, I feel strongly led by the Lord to do SO much more............

If roses grow in heaven, please pick a bunch for me, place them in my mothers arms and tell her they're from me. Tell her that I love and miss her, and when she turns to smile, place a kiss upon her cheek and hold her for a while, because remembering her is easy, I do it everyday, but there's an ache within my heart that never goes away... HAPPY MOTHERS DAY MOM. I love and miss you.

Omgsh, I think I just met the future "Gerber baby". 6 month old Mr. "C" had me wrapped right around his chubby little finger from the moment I saw his HUGE GORGEOUS blue eyes and adorable cheeks. And when he smiled at me........Ahhhhhhhh, he melted every ounce of my heart :) You'd never know it by looking at these images that he was cutting teeth and was pretty miserable for our session :( (always breaks my heart when these sweet little Angels are in pain). I know his Mama left our session feeling pretty defeated, but I reassured her that despite Mr. "C"'s moment of tears, I was very confident that we captured some really great shots. I hope she'll agree when she sees these gorgeous images of her sweet little boy :) It was a pleasure meeting you Mrs. "B". I'll be in touch in about 2 weeks with the rest of your beautiful portraits. Meet 7 month old Miss "J", full of life, love and absolute bliss. She was the happiest baby ever and her parents are just smitten with her (then again, so was I). I LOVED the hats her Mama brought and could not get enough of her sweet little face :) The only problem during the entire session was getting her adorable yellow polka dot dress off of her. Her little arms were stuck, so her Mama had to CUT (yes cut) the dress off of her :( Such a shame, but at least we got some great shots of her wearing it......not to mention, I think it'll make for an adorable halter dress for the hot summer days ahead. It was SO wonderful spending the morning with such an amazing family. Enjoy your sneak peek Mr. & Mrs. "K". Have a blessed weekend.

What a blessing this little Angel is not only to his own family, but to me as well. As always, I feel so blessed and SO honored that wonderful/amazing families trust ME to capture these fleeting/most cherished moments in their precious newborns lives :) Meet 13 day old Mr. "N" and his 2 year old big brother, Mr. "D" (who I also have had pleasure of photographing since he was 10 days old). Everyone who has dealt with sarcoma knows a hero or two. Heroes support, encourage and inspire us in extraordinary ways. Just when we need them most, they are there. They challenge us, comfort us, and give us hope.

The Team Sarcoma Everyday Heroes competition invites you to tell us about your hero. Entries will be published at the Team Sarcoma website, and three winning submissions will be chosen. A donation will be made to sarcoma research in honor of each winner’s hero, and each winner will choose which type of research their prize will fund.

A Trip To Heaven
I took a trip to heaven
But only in my mind
I wanted to know what it's like
To leave all you love behind.
So I closed my eyes, and started to see
Just how beautiful heaven can be.

I could see the pearly gates of white
and behind them was the most radiant light.
I saw an angel as she was passing by
so incredibly beautiful that a tear fell from my eye.
Everyone looked perfect and with the angels they did sing
There are no earthly words to describe the beauty of their wings.

As I sat on a bench in the most incredible garden
I asked God for all of my sins to be pardoned
I took one last look at all of the beauty around
And when I opened my eyes, it was peace that I found.
